On
Sunday June 19 Joy hosted a meeting of the River Run Book Club. We
were a small group so Joy extended the invitation to include former
member Beverly and a guest of Kathy's that we were pleased to meet. Our
day included a great lunch, sangria, and wonderful deserts.
Carol
led the discussion re Harriet Tubman. We held our usual critique and
it was apparent that for most of us the Larson book was dull dull dull.
Carol read not only Bound for the Promised Land but part of the Tubman
book ordered by the library. Kathy did as well and both thought the one
hour video for which Carol sent the link was well done and worth
watching. The library book contained the same data but was more concise
and may have been the better read.
Did
that mean there was little to discuss - NEVER! Of serious note,
everyone was glad with the book choice which gave us a much
better picture of daily life under slavery, who Harriet was and why she
deserves the recognition she is finally receiving today. When that
woman was through being a slave, a woodsman, a conductor on the
underground railroad, a spy, a nurse, and so much else - she went on to
fight for women's rights. Lincoln did not free the slaves! Although we
all lived through the more recent period of forced desegregation, most
of us were ourselves segregated by geography and experienced it only
through television and newspapers.
So
thanks Carol for suggesting this book, it gave us a better
understanding of our history. And thanks Joy, always beautifully done
and so comfortable to visit you.
The book voted on for August from Claire's suggestions is "The Language of Flowers". Kathy will order from the library.
