March 26, 2017, Meeting at Stephanie

Submitted by Ann S.

The March Meeting of the River Run Book Club was a rousing success as can be noted from the previous posts by those who so enjoyed Stephanie’s hospitality.  So here’s just a short note.

After a great lunch Marilyn led the group in a review of Cat’s Cradle. What ensued was a lengthy discussion regarding Vonnegut’s irreverent and humorous depiction of serious subjects--some of which include truth, religion, and the end of the world.  We also had a brief grammar lesson (thanks Marilyn) and wonderful desert, coffee, and lots of laughs.

Marlena submitted the book choices for May.  The book we choose is “The Friday Night Knitting Club” by Kate Jacobs.

Am I correct that Stephanie will not be at the April meeting but will submit a book list for our June discussion?

MaryJo has once again graciously volunteered the Inn for our April Meeting.

Date:                April 30, 2017
Where:             Colonel Spencer Inn

February 26, 2017, Meeting at the Sunset Grill

Prepared by Ann S.:

The February Meeting of the River Run Book Club was held at the Sunset Grille where the atmosphere is great and the food just wonderful.   Thanks Diane for setting this up.

This month’s book choice was “Mrs. Dallaway”, and while not everyone finished reading it, many watched the movie on youtube thanks to Kathy, so Lori was able to lead a spirited discussion on Clarissa’s life choices, most notably her past romantic connection with Sally, reasons for choosing Richard, and rejection of Peter Walsh.  Lori noted that death was a strong presence throughout the story, not just in the character of Septimus.  There was so much in this book to discuss that we were able to touch only lightly on some of the themes (Clarissa’s deep sympathy for Septimus) and characters (her daughter Elizabeth and Miss Killman).  While the actual reading of the book might have been a bit much for some, everyone was pleased with discussion of this book considered to be one of the best 100 novels of the 20th century.  At Lori and Kathy’s suggestion, many of us will now go on to read “The Hours”.

From MaryJo’s book suggestions for April, we choose “My Name is Lucy Barton” by Elizabeth Strout.

Next Meeting:
Date:                March 26, 2017
Where:             Stephanie’s
Time:               1 p.m.
Book:               Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut

Marlena will provide the book suggestions for May which we will vote on during the meeting at Stephanie’s.

Stephanie – if you prefer a time change, just let us know.

Spring is coming – we are looking forward to return of the snowbirds.
