We
sat in Stephanie's comfortable living room with the sun shining in. As
usual it was a interesting and fun meeting. We got our hors d'oeuvres
and wine and prepared to discuss "Sideways on a Scooter". Judy was back
with post its to keep us on track. Well, we didn't exactly stay on
track but compared the role of women in India with our own backgrounds.
Some felt they could not live in India's crowded conditions and would
never become desensitized to the misery and filth. It would have been
good to hear the observations from those who spent time in India but
were not home for this meeting. Yes most of us checked our big toe.
There was discussion on why you would alter your life to suit someone
else's idea of correctness (i.e. when she hides fact that Ted stayed
overnight). We were all surprised at how long she stayed.
While
the author seemed to jump from one subject to another, sometimes from
paragraph to paragraph, we learned a heck of a lot about India. The
copyright for this book is 2011. These changes for the role of women in
particular and also for the different castes are happening now in a
country where they abort 2,000 girls a day. Let's hope things continue
to change rapidly.
Stephanie
served us wonderful chicken soup (gave me some good ideas as to what to
add in my next batch). Desert included chocolates and a decadent
flourless chocolate cake served with raspberries and ice cream.
