Claire's Suggestions for our April, 2015 Book



Here are the choices for March bookclub

LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS by Vanessa Diffenbaugh

Story about unforgettable young woman whose gift for flowers help her change lives of others even as she struggles to overcome her own trouble past.

AGE OF IRON by J M Coetzee

Story of Mrs Curran living in Cape Town during Apartheid era. she is slowly dying of cancer and does not want her daughter who lives in America to know. Her daughter has left S Africa because of Apartheid  .Mrs Curran has never taken an active stance against Apartheid. She is  opposed to Apartheid. She has witnessed burning townships, killing of her servant,  She has formed a relationship of a different kind with a old homeless man sleeping in her driveway .and her black servant that changes her life for the better. This is a very powerful meaningful book that everyone should read. It shows the meaning of freedom and white rule.
 

SPUTNIK SWEETHEART by Haruki Murakami

A collage student identified only as K falls in love with his classmate Sumire. But devotion to an untidy writerly life precludes her from any personal commitments until she meets Miu, an older and much more sophisticated businesswoman. When Sumire disappears from an island off the coast of Greece K is solicited to join the search party and finds himself drawn back into her world and beset by ominous haunting visions.  a love story combined with a detective story. this book ultimately lingers in the mind as a profound meditation on human longing.  

SLOW MAN by J M Coetzee

When photographer Paul Rayment loses his leg in a bike accident his solitary life is irrevocally changed.  Stubbornly refusing a prosthesis, hr returns to his bachelor apartment, where he struggles with bouts of hopelessness, reluctantly adapts to his dependency on others and finds himself falling in love, Coetzee offers us a profound medication on what makes us human on what it means to grow older and reflect on how we have lived our lives.  he has crafted a deeply moving story about love and mortality that dazzles the reader on each page

THE GIVEN DAY by Dennis Lehane

 1919 police strike, corruption in police department,BABE RUTH, blacks in Boston, 

Luther a black man fleeing from Oklahoma moves to Boston. He works for Captain Thomas Coughlin as handyman and servant. there he befriends Nora an Irish immigrant who was taken in by the Coughlin's five year earlier. She and Danny the Captain's son have love affair.but ends when Danny discovers dark secret from her past. Luther is manipulated by corrupt Lieutinent Eddie Mckenna best friend to Captain Coughlin who knows his past. this is a wonderful book about what is happening after World War 1

Meetings stay as scheduled.

If a meeting has to be cancelled due to conditions in Lincoln area, then it is cancelled until the nx month. Seems only an emergency up state would prevent at least some members being able to get together for a meeting.

Maybe final decision for this Sunday should be Stephanie's. I can send my opinion of book and discussion questions as book was my suggestion.

I am currently in Missouri and will be returning to NH at the end of the week. We are scheduled to have our book club meeting on the 22nd at my house. Some of you are dealing with lots of issues related to snow and more snow is being predicted for Sunday. I'm not sure what we should do. One suggestions: Let's keep the date open and cancel if needed by Saturday. Any other suggestions?
